Fiduciary duty has become a popular headline topic in compliance news, especially as it is related to health and welfare benefit plans. Amid the legal actions filed related to plan fiduciaries and ERISA responsibilities, many folks find themselves asking what exactly plan sponsors need to be doing. Join us for Fiduciary Responsibility 101, where we will go through a high-level overview of what fiduciary duty is under ERISA, who is subject to it, and how plan sponsors can improve their compliance going forward. We will touch upon the legal concept of fiduciary duty, the legal status of plan fiduciaries, as well as the concept of fiduciary governance. Participants will gain a fundamental understanding of fiduciary responsibility and how it relates to their annual actions as a plan sponsor.

About Our Presenter, Marisa Rufo 

Marissa Rufo is a compliance consultant with a diverse background in legal experience and product development. She is currently a compliance advisor, regulatory affairs, and subject matter expert at MZQ Consulting, LLC, now Lumelight. MZQ, now Lumelight, is a benefits compliance, and ACA reporting firm that also specializes in ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, IRS Code, the ACA, and more.

Her legal background focused on litigation including broad civil litigation, personal injury, employment/union contracts, as well as civil and criminal tax controversy. In another life, as she likes to call it, she spent time in Washington D.C. working on the hill for various associations which has provided her with a unique perspective in addressing compliance issues for clients.

Though a New Jersey native, Ms. Rufo has called Baltimore, Maryland her home for over 7 years, and earned her B.A. from the University of Maryland. She also completed a dual degree program earning a J.D. and MBA from the University of Baltimore School of Law and School of Business, respectively.
